Opportunities In Asia

China and Asia

The economies of China and Asia have slowed, however, Hong Kong, being one of the most important gateways connecting China with the rest of the world, is best positioned to benefit from this persistent Asian economic growth.

China’s GDP is forecasted to grow by 4 to 5% in 2023. This figure may disappoint some but we believe it is not bad compared to many western countries which are suffering from high inflation. In 2021, her GDP exceeded US$18 trillion, up 8.1% year-on-year, and ranked the second after the US. It continues to be one of the major manufacturing hubs for the world.

The rising income and spending propensity of China’s middle and higher classes suggests that her overall domestic consumption should continue to enjoy high, though slowing, growth.

In the medium term, we foresee challenges ahead for China’s economy. With her population ageing and birth rate declining, China’s working population has started to shrink since years ago. This will pose a big challenge to the medium term growth prospects of China’s and therefore Hong Kong’s economies. There are also concerns on potential domestic debt worsening and technology decoupling on which we will keep an eye. However, we see both risks and opportunities in this structural socio-economic transformation. With our strength in stock selection, we will spot target companies riding on an accelerating automation/ digitalization/ decarbonization trend and changing the landscape of the companies/ businesses that we follow.

Value Investment & Catalysts

A huge number of mid caps and small caps are not covered by brokers or institutional investors. Deep value is always hidden in under-researched businesses with solid balance sheets and management with long-term vision.

In addition, corporate activities have been vibrant in the region given Hong Kong’s ready access to capital. Mergers and acquisitions, restructuring of business, asset injection, privatizations and rationalization of capital all give rise to our “catalysts-driven” investment approach.
